If I choose to date someone who hasn’t built a relationship with God, how could he really love me the way that I’m supposed to be loved? Without seeking God first, can he really understand how love is patient, kind, and forgiving? If he doesn’t know God, he won’t truly understand why I choose to live the way that I do.  How could he truly know how to love me when he hasn’t taken them time to experience God’s love first?

For Valentine’s Day, I decided to take the time to reflect on how I choose to wait on God during my season of singleness. I haven’t always kept God first when it comes to dating, but now I know the importance of starting relationships with others where mutual spiritual growth can occur. By building my relationship with God first, I have a better definition of how loving someone should be. “Love is patient. Love is kind. Live isn’t jealous. It doesn’t sing its own praises. It isn’t arrogant. It isn’t rude. It doesn’t think about itself. It isn’t irritable. It doesn’t keep track of wrongs. It isn’t happy when injustice is done, but it is happy with the truth.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-6).

Of course, I want to have a relationship in the future, and talking to God about this desire has made me more confident in waiting for the best kind of love He has for me. Waiting isn’t always easy, but during this time, you can learn more about yourself and increase your faith until it’s time to connect with your destined love.

When talking to God about the desires of your heart, here’s a prayer for yourself and future husband:

Dear Heavenly Father:

Help me to be patient and avoid temptation so I won’t rush into anything I don’t need. Instead, mold me into the woman I need to become so when I am destined to meet my future husband I will be ready to receive your blessing.

I pray that he learns to be strong, courageous, and stands firm in his faith.

Show him that he should seek you first in everything that he does.

Continuously work on his heart and transform him from the inside out, so when it is in your perfect timing, he will find me and love me the way that I deserve to be loved.

Strengthen him in the areas where he needs it the most.

Teach him the meaning of kindness and forgiveness.

Wrap your arms around him so that he learns his worth in Christ.

Guide him so he becomes the light for people around him.

Bless him with the wisdom and discernment to know how to love me so we may build and grow together and fulfill the purpose you have for our lives.
